There is a free service called Logmein. Go to www.logmein.com and set up a free account. Now go to each computer you own that you want to control through the internet, to to www.logmein.com and download and install the logmein software.
That's all it takes.
When you want to control any of those computers, just log in to your account at www.logmein.com and select the computer you want. It won't matter if you're controlling a computer on the same LAN or not. Also, all logmein traffic is encrypted and secure.
When you sign up at logmein.com, they have several options that have a cost to them, but you want the free one unless you want the extra features only available in the paid subscriptions. The free service allows you to completely control each computer, but it doesn't let you print to their printers through the internet or hear sound created by them through the net.
They also offer an iPhone app for $30 that works very well even over 3g.
